The 2013 A3C Hip Hop Festival kicked off last night (Oct. 2) in Atlanta, with a convergence of rappers, artists and fans swarming to several venues to take in the sights. With a staggering amount of lectures, films, in-store events and concerts, it is nearly impossible to take it all in but Hip-HopWired will be giving it the old college try.
In the downtown section, audiences got up close to see rising West Coast phenom Problem graced the stage with the skill and poise of a veteran. Following that energizing set, old-school pioneer Too $hort ran through a bevy of his hits both new and old, playfully gesturing with the crowd as he was walking the stage.
Across the way at Star Bar, Prodigy and Alchemist delivered a blistering set, with cuts from their recently released Albert Einstein joint project. Opening for the longtime collaborators was Detroit rapper Boldy James, who has an upcoming project with Alchemist as well.
Over at club 529, New Orlean’s Dee-1 and NYC underground rap duo Cannibal Ox were among the big names. Vast Aire and Vordul Mega ran through the requisite joints from their classic The Cold Vein record, thrilling those in attendance.
