Halloween, the time of the year of ghosts and ghouls, horror movies, trick or treating and the blissfully ignorant, or idiots, that think its open season on blackface. The latest to partake in the racist act (no matter the intent) is actress Julianne Hough.

Hough dressed up as Black actress Uzo Aduba’s character “Crazy Eyes” in Netflix series Orange Is The New Black at a Halloween party, which is all good. The problem is Hough also donned dark make up to make her look African-American, which is not good.

To her credit, Hough has apologized for her fail in judgement. “I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize,” she tweeted.

Now there will be folk who say, “Well she didn’t mean it in a minstrel sort of way” or, “What if a Black person dressed up as a white person, that wouldn’t be offensive.” The problem is blackface is a very real, racist and hurtful part of history. Better to leave it and any hint of its ugly legacy alone than to offend many then try to play it off with, “It was all in fun,” when you get called out on it.
