The utter mention of the name Oscar Grant still exposes an unhealed wound in the minds of many who witnessed his fatal and tragic demise in person and online.

Now it seems like history has repeated itself–with a more sinister twist.

A Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police officer has accidentally shot and killed his colleague during a probation search.

Sgt. Tom Smith, head of BART investigations, was the first officer to be killed in the line of duty in the agency’s 42 years of existence. He is survived by his daughter and wife, who too is a BART officer. The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated.

Reports ABC:

The shooting occurred just before 2 p.m. at the Park Sierra Apartments at 6450 Dougherty Road, Alameda County sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

Nelson said several officers went there to search an apartment belonging to a suspect in a series of recent robberies on BART.

The two officers entered the apparently empty apartment and one officer accidentally fired a shot that wounded the other officer, Nelson said.

The wounded officer was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he succumbed to his injuries, Nelson said.

The alleged suspect was not at home at the time of the incident.

22-year-old Grant was shot in the back while he was detained by former BART officer Johannes Mehserle. The movie Fruitvale Station was based off the events that took place.

Once again, there are no winners in this instance. Check the gallery for pictures of the friendly fire crime scene.
