8th Grade English Teacher Suspended For Teaching Kids Lil Wayne Lyrics [PHOTOS]
An ill-advised lesson in the art of Lil Wayne literature has resulted in a Florida teacher earning herself a trip to the principal’s office.
An 8th grade English teacher at The Charter Schools of Boynton Beach was having trouble getting her students to understand metaphors and similes so she turned to the expertise of Hip-Hop.
But when she printed out the explicit lyrics to Lil Wayne’s 2010 “6 Foot 7 Foot” from his Tha Carter IV album, parents weren’t thrilled that their kids were speaking in the language of a struggle.
The sheet of paper has parents like Vanessa Guzman outraged.
“This is crazy. They shouldn’t be giving this to kids in school,” said Vanessa Guzman.
After being reached for comment, school headmaster Wayne Owens released the following statement:
“The lesson was for students to learn to identify literary devices. The teacher had already introduced Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare. Students were having difficulty grasping the concepts of literary devices such as: pun, simile, metaphor, so the teacher used colloquial material. This material did not meet the school’s standards and was not approved. The teacher recognizes that it was totally inappropriate for a school assignment,” wrote Owens.
This dunce cap moment notwithstanding, the teacher was said to have a good record within the school district and was only suspended for three days.
But apparently she has never heard of Common, Talib Kweli or Lecrae. In the meantime, she may want to do some Hip-Hop studying of her own.
