Disgraced former FOOD Network personality Paula Deen almost made it out of Black History Month 2014 unscathed–until she compared herself to openly gay NFL prospect Michael Sam.
The 67-year-old celebrity chef saw her empire crumble down this past summer when she openly admitted to making racist remarks about African-Americans and downplayed it by hiding behind her southern roots.
She was subsequently fired from the popular television channel’s regime and lost a host of endorsements. More than six months after the fact, it appears she hasn’t learned a thing.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Deen once again spoke carelessly by likening her struggle to Sam’s announcement that he was gay, stating “I feel like ‘embattled’ or ‘disgraced’ will always follow my name. It’s like that black football player who recently came out. I just want to be known as a football player. I don’t want to be known as a gay football player.’ I know exactly what he’s saying.”
Aside from a poor showing at the NFL combine and the understandable shell shock of his father, Sam has received the support of many of his peers. Not to mention Deen didn’t even identified by his name but by his race.
Paula Deen has been ridiculed for being a racist because she says racist things. If it walks, talks and acts like a duck, don’t use any Paula Deen recipes to roast it in.
