Ken Griffey, Jr. may be a future Hall of Famer and one of the few baseball players who could permeate Hip-Hop culture, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been living in struggle since retiring in 2010.
The man with the “perfect swing” appeared on SportsCenter yesterday, March 5 for an interview laden with one-word answers that veteran broadcaster Linda Cohn immediately cut short once she noticed his attention span had gone wayward, kind of like his weight.
MLB is gearing up for the 2014 season with spring training underway for all camps and baseball card behemoth Upper Deck were celebrating their 25th anniversary and wasted money on hiring Griffey to represent them. According to his recollection as a kid, the only baseball card he had growing up was his father’s because that was “the only player he knew.” When asked about which player resembled his playing style from ESPN’s fan Twitter feed, Griffey coldly responded with “McCutchen.”
Cohn clarified with the “Andrew McCutchen,” so non-baseball fans weren’t totally left in the dark. It came as no shock that Griffey responded his next question with a “McCutchen” as well. Cohn had excitedly stated how she used to cover the 13-time All-Star during her early journalist days in Seattle but Griffey was living proof the old adage about meeting your heroes was a harsh truth.
Shortly after the disaster, Cohn took to her Twitter account to state, “Just got off phone w Ken Griffey Jr. He apologized sincerely for how he came across in @SportsCenter int. I accepted his apology.”
It’s honorable that he realized the error of his smug demeanor, however the video will forever be live on the Internet. Peep the struggle in the video below.
