New York City Council To Honor Hip-Hop Legends Afrika Bambaata, Kurtis Blow & More
Councilman Fernando Cabrera is set to recognize some of Hip-Hop’s founding fathers with a New York City Council Proclamation. Honorees include Kurtis Blow, Melle Mel, and Afrika Bambaata.
According to an advisory sent from Councilman Cabrera’s office, select Rap pioneers will be shown the red carpet treatment on Wednesday, March 12. The event is set to take place at City Hall.
Late great Pete “DJ” Jones, who passed away earlier this year in January, will also receive a posthumous tribute. Jones is largely credited for being the first to use two turntables and two copies of vinyl which later became the standard for DJs.
“Pete gave many of the pioneers of Hip-Hop Culture a platform to showcase their talent,” Cabrera’s office stated in the event announcement.
Most recently FOX 5 News celebrated the history of Hip-Hop with DJ Kool Herc.
