Over the past two decades, few groups have captured the minds and attention of Hip-Hop fans like the Wu-Tang Clan. Although the massive crew has been divided on the upcoming A Better Tomorrow album, the Shaolin Swordsmen all weighed in on the record and much more in a revealing profile piece.

Grantland published a 10-part profile on each of the Clan’s main members, opening the piece with behind the scenes look at the crew before their performance at Bonnaroo last year. Although Cappadonna cites “togetherness” as a hallmark of the Clan, months later it appears that whatever magic the Wu has left is possibly fading.

From Grantland:

Wu-Tang has promised one more, possibly one last album. New music has appeared in dribs and drabs: Last summer, a purported lead single, “Family Reunion,”1 arrived to little fanfare; just this week a follow-up, “Keep Watch,” showed up without warning. But the group has failed to deliver on anything close to a proper full-length album. And in the process, they’ve made one thing clear: This thing is broken. For as much as the group members talk about unity and foreverness, they can’t get in a room and agree. They can’t get their sh-t together.

The piece is well worth the time to read and author Amos Barshad digs deep as a reporter to pull out the best from each subject, all while tempering his love of the group from tampering with the potency of the story. The entire profile is chock full of quotable lines.

From tales on how Clan members first met, to grumblings on why A Better Tomorrow may be a doomed project, this is perhaps the most detailed look into the Wu-Tang Clan machine.
