Hip-Hop has taken Chance The Rapper across the world and beyond rather quickly, but at the root of it all, he’s a MC born and bred in Chicago. Yesterday, “The Writer,” an unreleased song by the rapper that captures his hometown’s essence, found its way onto the Internets.

There’s something about a beat with piano keys, but that instrumentation is even more potent when laced with boom bap drums. That’s the recipe for this jam, which Chance meets in the middle with thoughtful bars like “I’m a writer, probably as good as Elton John/But what’s writing good if it ain’t helping moms.”

Though enjoyable, it’s clear that this cut is dated. But the record definitely shows that young Chancellor Bennett has always been talented.

Lend your ear to the soulful tune that is Chance The Rapper’s “The Writer” below. Give us your thoughts in the comments.
