Funkmaster Flex is taking being the self-proclaimed “Digital King” very seriously. Today (April 22), Emmis Communications announced that it is partnering with Flex to have him create digital platforms (read: websites) for the brand’s various radio personalities.

Emmis is the parent company of mainstream radio stations like New York City’s Hot 97 and Los Angeles’ Power 106. Emmis has entered into a joint venture with popular DJ’s Flexco to create a “network of owned and operated digital platforms.”

Hip-Hop Wired happened to speak with Flex recently about his new venture.

“I have a new position here, Creative Director of Digital,” Funkmaster Flex tells Hip-Hop Wired. “I am building websites for Angie Martinez, I’m helping DJ Enuff with ThatsEnuff.com, I’m building Ebro’s site.”

The Bronx native isn’t sticking with just the local team, though. He adds, “I’m going to build a site for LA Leakers, [DJ] Felli Fel and Big Boy. So I’m doing it for Emmis.”

Flex has found success with his own InFlexWeTrust.com and the DJ Funk Flex Mobile app, which he hopes to translate to these new digital platforms. He also mentioned having something “innovative” and “shocking” with music streaming site Pandora in the works, too.

“We’re thrilled to invest in Flex’s digital assets and work closely with him to continue to innovate in the digital space, said Patrick Walsh, CFO, COO and Emmis Radio Division President, via a press statement. “We expect this partnership to enable us to rapidly expand our digital content offering for our passionate fans and advertisers.”

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but Emmis will be now be a 40% owner of Flexco. So digital.
