Yasiin Bey Barred From Returning To United States, Cancels Tour

Yasiin Bey, the former Mos Def, has been moving in mysterious ways since his early days in Brooklyn. Jumping from New Orleans to his current residence in South Africa over the years, the talented rapper and entertainer has been barred from reentering the United States for legal and immigration reasons.

A statement was issued last week ahead of Bey’s upcoming U.S. tour, just days before his scheduled May 15 date at Boston’s Wilbur Theater. Not much could be taken from the briefly-worded statement except the glaring opening sentence that has been raising eyebrows since the announcement.

The statement read: “We regret to inform you that due to immigration / legal issues Yasiin Bey is unable to enter back into the United States and his upcoming U.S. tour has been canceled, including May 15th, Together Boston’s show at The Wilbur Theater. Individual ticket refunds for this show are available at point of sale.”

Bey has been living in South Africa for much of the past year after a visit last May inspired him to leave Brooklyn and make the transatlantic trek. Rumors are swirling about that Bey gave up his U.S. citizenship in making the move, while others speculate his outspoken stances against American hostage policies may be at the root.

I would think that if a person gives up his citizenship to move to another country than he would be treated just like any other person who is not a legal citizen and want to become one which means you would have to go thru the normal procedure just like anyone else.I don’t beleive it’s for political reasons because there have been many blacks who have been very vocal and out spoken about diffrent issues it’s more to this than meets the eye.

He probably didn’t pay his child support or something. Doesn’t he have like 50-11 kids. Quit running Mos!

Now I’m not too familiar with passports and things of that nature, but don’t people have duel citizenships ? Don’t people go back and forth between countries all the time ?

You can not be barred from US for not paying child support. There is a legal system of due process from all “US Born Citizens”. This means whether you have current duel citizenship, obtained citizenship to another country. How do you think we as a country can expedite US citizens from other countries for crimes? This is something much more…anyone from the powers that be can answer that?

Who told you to RENOUNCE your citizenship? Bad move.
