A pair of children heading outside to get Icees Sunday evening in Brooklyn were stabbed repeatedly by an unknown man while riding on an elevator. The boy, 6-year-old Prince Joshua Avitto, was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The girl, 7-year-old Mikayla Capers, is fighting for her life in critical condition.

The incident took place around 6 p.m. at the Boulevard Houses on Schenck Avenue in East New York. The children, who family and residents say were best friends, were riding in the elevator when a heavyset man said to be in his 20s entered behind them. According to a New York Times report, NYPD said the attack appears to be random and a knife was recovered at the scene.

From The Times:

Deputy Chief Patrick Conry said the two children — the 6-year-old-boy and the 7-year-old girl — were stabbed shortly before 6 p.m. at the Boulevard Houses on Schenck Avenue in East New York. Police officials said they did not believe the children were related to each other or to the assailant, a man who Chief Conry said fled on foot and who was described as heavyset and in his 20s.

The boy was pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where the girl had been in critical condition before she was transferred to New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Avitto had an upcoming birthday on June 17.

No arrest has been made in the case, but police say that the attack appeared to be random.
