Tyler, The Creator is polarizing in most cases, but he exudes authenticity in a way that’s rare and respectable. That quality also makes for entertaining interviews, which could be seen during the Odd Future affiliate’s recent discussion with Larry King.
Tyler spoke on a range of topics, including his stance on the N-word, growing up without a father, why he doesn’t like being called a rapper, the Mountain Dew controversy, and much more.
“I hate rapping, only because it puts you in this box,” he said. “I was scared for this interview, because me being a rapper, I was scared of the type of questions that you would probably ask me — not even on purpose, but because I’m a rapper.”
If anything is clear during Tyler and King’s discussion, it’s that he fears being put in a box. “I’m talented enough to do other things,” the wordsmith said. “In the future, I want to do films. I want people to mention my name next to Wes Anders0n or Quentin Tarantino. I don’t want my name to mentioned next to other rappers at all.”
