Rashad McCants Says UNC Let Him Cheat Through College, Fellow Tar Heels Respond [Photos]

Former North Carolina Tar Heels basketball star Rashad McCants made a shocking revelation today (June 6) that should have the NCAA looking to tighten up their already-suffocation leash on student-athletes.

McCants claims that his during his tenure at UNC, he made the Dean’s List without actually going to class. According to a recent interview with ESPN’s Outside the Lines, McCants skated through his classes during Spring semester 2005 where he received A’s in all four of his classes. Ironically, the Tar Heels went on to win the National Championship during that particular March Madness and McCants alleges he was guided by academic advisors to take particular courses where attendance wasn’t mandatory.

He also says coach Roy Williams knew exactly what was going on at the time.

Both Williams and UNC Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham both denied the allegations in their respective statements.

Via Go Heels:

Roy Williams: With respect to the comments made today, I strongly disagree with what Rashad (McCants) has said. In no way did I know about or do anything close to what he says and I think the players whom I have coached over the years will agree with me. I have spent 63 years on this earth trying to do things the right way and the picture he portrays is not fair to the University or me.”

Bubba Cunningham: “It is disappointing any time a student is dissatisfied with his or her experience. I welcome the opportunity to speak with Rashad McCants about returning to UNC to continue his academic career – just as we have welcomed many former student-athletes interested in completing their degrees.

Since becoming Carolina’s director of athletics, I have gotten to know some of Mr. McCants’ teammates, and I know that claims about their academic experience have affected them deeply

Current and fellow Tar Heels were less-than politically correct in their responses to McCants, as was much of Black Twitter. McCants played five seasons in the NBA before seeing his career stall out, forcing him overseas. Many feel that his revelations were a blatant act of drysnitching.
