Taye Diggs may be known to date white women, but that little tidbit isn’t stopping him from speaking out against the double standards of race that are still plaguing the creation of Black movies in Hollywood.

The veteran actor says the follow-up to the wildly popular The Best Man Holiday’s fate hangs in the balance of the success of movies such as the upcoming Think Like a Man Too. Diggs is currently starring in the TNT drama Murder in the First, but says that he and his fellow Best Man cast mates are ready to resume their roles to complete a third film.

“Unfortunately, the business is such that as far as studios are concerned, they judge one quote-unquote black movie on how other ‘black’ movies have done, even if they have nothing to do with each other,” he tells the Associated Press.

“We’ve definitely come a long way. But we’ve got a long way to go,” he said. “It’s too bad we can’t do well on our own merit when it comes to the studios. They don’t like to take risks and, unfortunately, we’re still considered a huge risk, even though I don’t think we are.”

Released in November 2013, The Best Man Holiday went on to gross $70 million in North America alone, proving that African-American audiences still have an interest in supporting movies that cater to their culture. Still, Diggs feels that the methodology behind studio’s thought process isn’t easy on the nerves.

“That’s ridiculously frustrating,” he adds.

Universal Studios declined to comment on the story.
