R. Kelly‘s name has been buzzing as details of the veteran R&B star’s life will be on glaring display in an upcoming Lifetime biopic on late former protege Aaliyah. With the recent coming out announcement of his 13-year-old child, as transgender, the Chicago native spoke with a local radio station briefly about the matter.

Kelly was on his hometown’s WGCI station backstage after its weekend Summer Jam concert, sharing a bit of his career arc and gushing over the adoration he received from the fans. But things took a dicey turn when Tony Sculfield’s Morning Riot co-host Nina Chantele asked Kelly about his son, Jay.

“You don’t really want to open this up with saying my daughter is becoming my son,” said Kelly to the host. When Chantele tried to clear up any confusion by saying she was just quoting the blogs, Kelly took the high road but dodged the matter seemingly.

“Always believe what you see, with your own eyes that is. That’s the best way to go about this business I’ve heard a lot of things about a lot of people and it was never true,” added Kelly.

Sculfield interjected before the conversation totally derailed, bringing up rumors that Kelly lost his home. Kelly said that because of his divorce he sold his large home, calling it a “money furnace” in his own words.

But what was curious is that while stating proudly he’s saved money by selling the home so that he can save money and send his children to college, he used the phrase “no matter what they are, what they are, they’re still your kids.”

“Even when you see it with your own eyes, you gotta know that there’s a backstory. It’s a background, that’s why you can’t judge nobody,” said regarding his child. “I don’t address that though. That’s the thing. Why do you think I’ve been here for 27 years and still relevant? Because I don’t address [BLANK] that’s dumb. I don’t do it.”
