The people have spoken? Zendaya Coleman has dropped out of the forthcoming Aaliyah biopic, Aaliyah Princess of R&B.

Reaction to the casting from fans was mixed, but the family was adamant that they were not supporting the film, adding that Aaliyah deserves more than a television film and that they would not grant the use of her music in the film.

About 10 days ago, the 17-year-old Disney actress challenged critics who said that she was not Black enough to portray the late singer. However, yesterday (June 29) Lifetime sent out a tweet relaying that Zendaya was no longer involved with the film.

“We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold,” read the message.

According to TMZ, the family’s reaction was at least part of the reason Zendaya decided not to be involved.
