The USA has officially been eliminated from the World Cup as of Tuesday (July 1) after Belgium beat out America 1-2 in overtime. The win means that Belgium moves forward to play Argentina this weekend, and the USA team is off getting a drink in Brazil somewhere (it’s only right).

Losing the game is doubly embarrassing because the Waffle House made a big deal out of boycotting belgian waffles, when they should be more concerned with keeping their restaurants clean.

From the New York Times:

Tim Howard was heroic in keeping the game scoreless through 90 minutes, and he ended the evening credited officially with 15 saves. But in the third minute of extra time, Kevin De Bruyne finally broke the deadlock. He was set up by Romelu Lukaku, who had just come into the match.

Lukaku made it 2-0 at 105 minutes, seemingly putting the match out of reach.

But the 19-year-old Julian Green came on for the start of the second extra period and scored on his first touch, taking an inch-perfect pass from Michael Bradley and volleying it home to make it 2-1 in the 107th minute.

The Americans came close to tying a couple of times in the final minutes but couldn’t quite connect. Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtois robbed Clint Dempsey off a free kick, after Dempsey got free in the area.

The Americans were eliminated in extra time in the Round of 16 for a second consecutive World Cup, after losing to Ghana, 2-1, in 2010.

There is a silver lining to the USA’s World Cup showing. Americans finally realize that the sport known the world over as “football” is actually pretty interesting.
