Upon successfully completing a KickStarter campaign, DJ Mars is proud to present The Art Behind The Tape.

As the founder of Atlanta’s first DJ Collective The World Famous SuperFriends, DJ Mars has now authored an unprecedented table book that examines the history and culture behind the vintage mixtape. Due out August 2014, The Art Behind The Tape encompasses classic mixtape artwork and interviews from Mars, his team of writers, and journalists like Maurice Garland and Tai Saint-Louis.

“Those that know me know that I have been toying around with this “History of Mixtapes” project for quite some time,” says DJ Mars in a press release. “After reading Bling Bling and how it told the story of rappers and their jewelry, I started to think about what other Hip-Hop related stories haven’t been told. Very naturally it dawned on me that no one has told the story about the history of mixtapes, especially the cover art. I found that interesting, especially since it’s such a global phenomenon.”

The result? More than 200 pages of classic photos from celebrated Hip-Hop photographer Joe Conzo, plus images from the days of mixtape past. Not to mention, over 90 thorough interviews from notables who have contributed to the mixtape culture.
