The track and field world is in state of collective shock after gold medalist Torrin Lawrence was killed early Monday morning when his vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer as he proceeded to change a flat tire.

Via TMZ:

Team USA sprinter Torrin Lawrence — one of the best sprinters in the country — died Monday morning after his car was struck by a tractor trailer … officials confirm.

The 25-year-old — who recently won a gold medal with the U.S. in the 4×400 relay at the IAAF World Relays — was driving in Georgia around 1:40 AM when his car blew a tire and came to a stop.

Lawrence got out of the car to call 911 — but a big rig struck the vehicle … which knocked the car into Torrin. Lawrence died in the wreck.

USA Track & Field CEO Max Siegel issued a statement saying, “Torrin represented USATF with pride and passion, and had an incredible future ahead of him. We join those who will miss him deeply.”

Lawrence was a standout at the University of Georgia — and holds the NCAA record for fastest indoor 300m sprint.

IAAF teammate Manteo Mitchell was one of the first to share his disbelief saying, “This can’t be real life man. Just talked to him yesterday man…. RIP Torrin! See ya up there one day. Prayers w/fam,” on his official Twitter account.

Hip-Hop Wired is offering those exact same condolences to the friends and family.
