The man who videotaped the fatal chokehold death of Eric Garner by the NYPD in Staten Island has been arrested. Ramsey Orta, credited with the footage, was arrested last Saturday for gun possession along with a teen girl outside a hotel.

Orta, 22, was observed by police speaking to 17-year-old Alba Lekaj outside the Hotel Richmond in Staten Island Saturday night around 9:45 p.m. The pair entered the hotel, and then exited when Orta placed a .25 caliber Norton handgun in Lekaj’s waistband.

They were both arrested on the spot on weapons possession charges, police said. Lekaj also had a Ziplock bag full of marijuana in her bra and was charged with marijuana possession, police said.

Lekaj was arraigned and released Sunday, while Orta was still awaiting arraignment Monday, prosecutors said.

He’s been arrested 25 times for assault, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of marijuana, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Orta was undoubtedly on the NYPD’s radar, this after getting arrested for assault just last month. There has been some speculation online that Orta was tailed by the cops, and they waited to get the drop on him.
