Country Grammar: 13 Reactions To Nelly’s #Ferguson Radio Interview [Photos]

Nelly waited a little too long to talk about the Mike Brown shooting. Naturally, Twitter isn’t having it, especially after he tweeted about Cheerios before making  a statement about Brown.

Just because he’s from St. Louis doesn’t mean he’s a spokesperson for the area but nonetheless, five days of no comment ended yesterday on the airwaves of Hot 104.1 radio station in St. Louis. He jumped on air for a good three hours yesterday to explain his stance on the Brown shooting, and uprisings in Ferguson over the past week or so.

Instead of aligning with the outraged residents, he told everyone to calm down, think before they act, and stop disrespecting Brown’s legacy.

That “Country Grammar” didn’t translate well because the reaction wasn’t overwhelmingly positive. Even some of the callers went in on him. Their complaint was that Nelly doesn’t get the whole picture of exactly what’s been going on in Ferguson before Brown was shot. He’s from the area, but  maybe he’d rather talk things out than resort to violence. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Check some of the reactions to his interview in the gallery.

I’m not surprised. Today’s rappers represent the establishment more so than they do the people. We, the people, should be much more aware of who we support.

Nelly gotta keep Ms Jackson happy, so he ain’t messing up that Cheerios money for NOBODY……..especially a slain black unarmed teenage male from his neighboring St. Louis…..

    • BornSupreme

What would messing up his money resolve? How would that help the situation?

  • chaka1

THESE RAPPERS DON’T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING OR ANYONE. They are not stand up spokespeople for the real issues facing our community. Don’t look to them for any inspiration.

  • Lady

Maybe he is desensitized. But yes it is true, 95% of these black entertainers don’t care:( Too bad they don’t use their influence to uplift the community.

  • MetalSlugger

These slaves today oh boy ….

  • BornSupreme

Because rioting and complaining is going to bring the kid back. What does his “statement” resolve? What can he say that hasn’t already been said? Stop pointing fingers and blaming people who have nothing to do with it. The kid died because of racism and prejudice. We are “pre-judged” to be unlawful, unrefined, and uncouth. Now we’re blaming anyone who refuses to behave that way. Blame the fckn cop who did it , teach these kids better, set better examples and stop looking to fckn celebrities for the answer/someone to blame. Yes, IM BLACK, YES IM SAD ABOUT IT, NO IM NOT A CELEBRITY.

“Because rioting and complaining is going to bring the kid back”

Obviously, nothing will bring Michael Brown back, but the complaining (not the rioting) is simply a means to an end. I agree with much of what you’ve said, but understand most of the rage expressed by the people of Ferguson was likely decades in the making. When you consider the pathology of racism that plagues economic, social and political structures in much of the U.S. and their respective impact on African Americans you’ll get results such as what happened this week in Ferguson.

No excuse for the rioting though. That only hurts what little economic power blacks in that community probably have.

  • BornSupreme

BLAMING EVERYONE WHO DOESN’T STEP UP TO ACT A DAMN FOOL WON’T BRING HIM BACK NOR CHANGE ANYTHING. THAT TYPE OF BEHAVIOR IS ONE OF THE REASONS WE’RE FACKED, AS IT IS. AS A BLACK MAN, IT SHOULD BE UNDERSTOOD THAT HE’S HURT! WHY DOES HE GET BLAMED JUST BECAUSE HE’S NOT PUTTING ON A SHOW, PRETENDING TO HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THE SITUATION, OR ACTING A DAMN FOOL?!!? WHO THE FACK ARE YOU TO JUDGE HOW THIS MAN FEELS???!!! DO BETTER!

    • Panther

Why do you have to act a fool to acknowledge the fact of the situation. Nobody told him go act stupid, he can use his platform to speak out against the treatment of black men..SINCE HE IS ONE

  • BornSupreme

Blame Nelly. That’ll solve the problems. Smh

  • BornSupreme

They already blocked my reply which, by the way had no profanity or malice. That only tells me that this post is not about discussing the issues. Its only purpose was to trash Nelly. Bye.

  • Wtfcity

Protesting is cool but all that looting is uncool. Burning down businesses will not accomplish anything. He’s right. You gotta think before you move.

  • divinnalafeme

Nelly responded over ig 12 hours after it happened and that cheerios tweet is older than Mike Browns murder have a brain people and do better research.

  • divinnalafeme

I also would like to add that he and Mike Browns mother have started a scholarship foundation in his honor so post on that and stop looking for new reasons to hate on this man.

  • Mia C

    Nelly, surprisingly, is COMPLETELY RIGHT.

But the thugs and trashy animals want to beat all common sense down.

Notice how it’s only the trashy people who are trashing and terrorizing the law abiding people of Ferguson. I guarantee every regular law abiding person, home owner, business owner and GOOD parent wishes the animals would quit looting and destroying their community.

No thanks
