No one should ever risk their freedom for turtles. They tend to only listen to Master Splinter anyway.

Still, a Canadian man taped 51 turtles to his legs and groin, and then smuggle them into Canada like no big deal.

He didn’t get very far.

Authorities stopped Kai Xu at a Detroit border during a sting operation. Wildlife agents revealed that Xu was caught on camera last month hiding behind semi-trailers in a parking lot, presumably to shove tons of turtles into his secret places. When he returned back to the camera’s view, there were “irregularly shaped bulges” underneath his sweatpants.

Xu didn’t work alone, he  had an accomplish. Lihua Lin, tried to fly out of Detroit and into Shanghai Tuesday (Sept. 23) with a couple of checked bags full of turtles. Two hundred, to be exact.

The men wanted to sell the reptiles in Canada and Asia. The pond turtles go for $1,300 to $1,500 in the Canadian Asian food and collectors markets.
