Of the two major controversies the NFL are juggling, it’s agreed that the league’s handling of the Ray Rice abuse controversy was far from pristine. That said, claims that the league was privy to a tape showing the former Baltimore Raven knocking his now wife unconscious prior to it leaking are expounded on in an AP report, featuring more details from the anonymous Atlantic City law enforcement official who sent the tape to a league official back in August.

League security chief Jeffrey Miller was sent the clip, accompanied by a note that read, “Ray Rice elevator video. You have to see it. It’s terrible.” In the same report, the official played a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number, in which a woman says “You’re right. It’s terrible.”

Now come the specifics.

“No one from the NFL ever asked me for the inside-elevator video,” the official said to AP. “I mailed it anonymously to Jeff Miller because he’s their head of security. I attached a note saying: ‘Ray Rice elevator video. You have to see it. It’s terrible.’ I provided a number for a disposable cellphone and asked for confirmation that it was received. I knew there was a possibility Mr. Miller may not get the video, but I hoped it would land in the right hands.”

According to the official, Miller’s background in law enforcement as the commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police made him the obvious choice to receive the intel. He became the NFL’s director of strategic security in 2008, before he was promoted to security chief in 2011.

The aforementioned voicemail is the only proof that the tape was received, though the NFL continue to deny any previous knowledge of its existence. The story is still developing.
