Daniel Crespo, the mayor of Bell Gardens, California, a small Los Angeles suburb, was apparently shot and killed by his wife, Levette, after a confrontational domestic dispute.

Authorities say the incident happened around 2:30 p.m. yesterday September 30, 2014, at a condominium in Bell Gardens, California. The Los Angeles Times reports that a heated altercation broke out in the couple’s bedroom when their 19-year-old son, Daniel Jr. attempted to intervene.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said the two men begin to fight when Levette grabbed a firearm and shot her husband multiple times in the torso. He was pronounced dead en route to the hospital.

Levette was taken into custody and questioned by sheriff’s officials but was released without an arrest being made. Daniel Jr. voluntarily arrived at the station to give his account of the events that transpired. He was also admitted to the hospital for the multiple lacerations on his face that from the fight between his father.

Nishida had said the couple were arguing about money before the struggle turned deadly. William Crespo had just spoken with his brother prior to the fight and his retelling of the conversation backed up the claim.

“We were fighting; she says I spend too much money,” William told KTLA 5. “He was really tired. He had been working all night and she wouldn’t let him sleep,” he continued. The mayor also worked full-time as a probation officer in between his public service to Bell Gardens.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office are currently determining whether charges should be filed or not.
