Earlier this year, the powers that be granted Channing Tatum his wish by giving him the role as Gambit to play in a future X-Men film. Now it seems that wish has been magnified as the Gambit movie will be a standalone spinoff in the mutant superhero film franchise.

Taylor Kitsch starred as the ragin’ Cajun in the 2009 box-office winner, Wolverine: Orgins, but fans and the studio (apparently) felt that Remy LeBeau needed to tell his story on a bigger scale.

Deadline has also learned that Josh Zetumer, writer of this year’s Robocop reboot, will also pen the screenplay. It will be based on a treatment written by Marvel Comics writer Chris Claremont, who is also the co-creator of the popular character.

Fox has also enlisted Reid Carolin, who is also working on Magic Mike XXL with Tatum to produce the film, alongside The Donners Company’s Lauren Shuler Donner, and Genre Films’ Simon Kinberg.

The yet-untitled feature will likely be the ninth or tenth installment in the X-Men film series, with the latest one, X-Men: Days of Future Past premiering this past May. They have all combined for a total gross of more than $3 billion.

No report when filming will begin but following his stripper sequel, Tatum will begin to promote upcoming Foxcatcher, which was a knockout at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
