Adrian Peterson’s recent plea deal and subsequent sentencing hasn’t won the NFL superstar any cool points with the folks who sponsor him.

His relationship with Nike was already hanging on by a jock strap thread and yesterday (November 6), the sports behemoth went on ahead and terminated his deal which had been suspended since September 17.

After pleading no contest to misdemeanor reckless assault in a child abuse case that was heightened in the wake of the league’s other domestic violence issues, Peterson was ordered to perform 80 hours of community service and was ordered to pay a $4,000 fine. The agreement did keep him from seeing any jail time, however.

To make matters worse, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that legal slap on the wrist won’t propel Peterson back in the league any faster.

NFL advised Adrian Peterson this afternoon that following his plea agreement to resolve his criminal case in Texas his matter will now be reviewed for potential discipline under the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy. As part of the process, the NFL has requested that Peterson submit relevant information regarding his case and meet with designated experts who will make recommendations for the Commissioner’s consideration. Peterson also will have the opportunity to have a hearing prior to the issuance of any discipline. Pending completion of the process, Peterson’s status on the Reserve/Commissioner Exempt list will remain unchanged.

When all this blows over, we’re sure a certain company will likely be glad to pick up the ashes of the Adrian Peterson Nike contract and turn it into gold. As for the NFL teams, there are several who are in dire need of a good ground game.
