Lifetime announced that it would be releasing a Whitney Houston biopic directed by celebrated actress Angela Bassett earlier this year. The network has announced a premiere date and revealed additional details about the film, which is titled Whitney.

Whitney will air on January 17 next year, and there are hopes that the film will fare far better than the widely-panned Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B. Bassett, a first-time director, had the task of pulling out the best from America’s Next Top Model and The Butler star Yaya DaCosta in the title role.

The Grio writes:

The network announced today that Whitney, starring Yaya DaCosta in the title role, will feature Deborah Cox reprising Houston’s vocal performances, including her hits, “The Greatest Love of All,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “I’m Every Woman,” and “I Will Always Love You.”

According to Lifetime, “Whitney chronicles the headline-making relationship between the iconic singer, actress, producer and model Whitney Houston and singer and songwriter Bobby Brown from the time they first met at the very height of their celebrity to their courtship and tumultuous marriage.”

After Whitney airs Lifetime will broadcast the documentary, Beyond The Headlines: Whitney Houston. The documentary will examine Houston’s life, career and will feature interviews from those who were close to the award-winning vocalist

Whitney airs on January 17 at 8 p.m. ET. Beyond The Headlines: Whitney Houston airs at 10:00 p.m. ET.
