On Saturday (Dec. 13), thousands marched in New York and Washington in separate marches in support of stamping out police brutality and calling attention to recent high-profile cases. At both events, gatherers rallied in support of the families of Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Akai Gurley and others who have fallen under questionable circumstances at the hands of police.

The earlier of the two marches began in downtown D.C.’s Freedom Plaza. Sponsored by the National Action Network, the “Justice For All March” began at 10:30 a.m. with the march portion starting at noon. Across social media, scenes of the Justice For All March were being consistently piped in along with some criticism from youth leaders who headed efforts in Ferguson, Mo. and other areas. In fact, some of those young voices of the movement stormed the staged and took the microphone at one point before it was silenced.

In New York, there was similar passion at play as an unspecified numbers of marchers met at Washington Square Park to NYPD’s headquarters at One Police Plaza for the “Millions March NYC” event. Major networks such as CBS covered the march, and the images available were inspiring. Braving cool temperatures, people of all ages and races collectively moved in peace during the march while displaying protest signs and emotional expressions of the anguish many have felt in the past few months.

Sharpton and other speakers addressed the throng in Washington, who stood in solidarity with Garner’s family. Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, also spoke at the Justice For All event ahead of the march itself. There was also reports of a gathering of hundreds in Boston supporting the efforts of New York and Washington.

Also on Saturday, a “Day Of Resistance” march was also called and used harsher language than the press releases for the Justice For All and Millions March NYC events. No word on how many people attended that event.

CBS New York reported that two officers were assaulted at the protests. The injuries were said to be non-life threatening.
