Brian Williams’ little white “misremembering” of an account that transpired in 2003 Iraq just may be the nail in the coffin for the veteran news anchor’s career.
Last week, NBC News posted a 12-year-old video clip to their Facebook page where Williams recounted his war hero tale of being in a Chinook helicopter that took RPG fire. The video began to many of comments–prompted from Lance Reynolds writing “Sorry dude, I don’t remember you being on my aircraft. I do remember you walking up about an hour after we had landed to ask me what had happened.”
Shortly after that online sh*tstorm, Williams offered some “clarification” on his story: “I want to apologize. I said I was traveling in an aircraft that was hit by RPG fire. I was instead in a following aircraft,” he said. ” I made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago.”
Shortly after, Williams’ Twitter account was scrubbed of all activity, leaving a picture of barren news desk at NBC headquarters. The Washington Post points out that Williams has knowingly lied on his war wounds on several occasions over the years and obviously was only going to come clean when exposed.
Which is where social media comes in. For nearly 24 hours, trending topics such as #BrianWilliamsWarStories and #BrianWilliamsMisremembers have been flooding timelines with no signs of subsiding.
