Pharrell, already a winner at the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards, hit the big stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles as a performer as well. Skateboard P rocked an epic performance for his smash hit “Happy,” delighting fans and making a sly nod to the families and supporters of Michael “Mike” Brown and Eric Garner.

Although the GRAMMY Awards have been especially tame with some of the non-rock performances, Pharrell’s injection of energy in the building was a welcome rush. Decked out in an all-Black outfit making him appear to be a bellhop of some sort, Pharrell took to the stage saying he’s a “[h]ot air balloon that could go to space” with the stage spotlight squared on him.

It wasn’t the “Happy” people were used to, as a trio of violinists in yellow garb played a much darker version of the tune while dancers also decked out in black danced behind Pharrell. Then the original tune rose back to the forefront with choir dancers hitting the aisles.

A high point of the performance, however, was pianist Lang Lang going for his with a powerful solo as Pharrell and the dancers raised their arms into a “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” gesture.

Peep the performance in the clip below. Our apologies as the clip seems to get cut short.
