A little over five years of patience will finally pay off for Fashawn fans, as his sophomore album, The Ecology, releases via Mass Appeal Records on February 24.
Hip-Hop Wired chopped is up with the MC, and the conversation touched on how his highly anticipated collab with Nas, “Something to Believe In,” came about.
“The homie Esco, I bumped into him in Germany while I was doing festivals and the album cover. We had a crazy three hour conversation, and out of that came the song ‘Something to Believe In,” Fashawn revealed. “Nas asked, ‘What song am I going to hop on?’ I played it for him that night and the rest is history.”
Fash recalled hearing Nas’ verse for the first time, and described receiving it as “the craziest morning ever,” because virtually no one knew of the verse’s existence.
But that’s just part of the backstory behind “Something to Believe In.” Aloe Blacc, who sings on the record, actually quarterbacked the track, as it was initially set to appear on a project he’s yet to release. “[Aloe] told me to pick any song that I wanted from the project, and then DJ Khalil put his hands on it. The song constantly evolved.”
