Last November, Alaska was among several states to legalize marijuana for “medicinal” purposes. As the decriminalization movement; Charlo Greene; has since doubled its efforts, Reuters is reporting that smoking, growing and owning small amounts of the green, leafy drug became legal on Tuesday, February 24.
That being said, smoking in public and buying and selling the drug remains illegal but when used and exchanged in private, everything is kosher under the new laws. It also remains illegal under federal law.
“Alaska now has some of the most sensible marijuana laws in the nation,” Dr. Tim Hinterberger, chairman of the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, said in a statement to the press.
Washington D.C. and Oregon, the other two regions who voted yes on allowing the weed to proceed, haven’t been as fast to get their legalization measures put into play. The nation’s capital has been seeing resistance from Congress, but mayor Muriel Bowser is greenlighting the city to legalize “small amounts of marijuana and pot plants.” Oregon will get their celebration day in July 2015.
For those who still aren’t convinced that marijuana bans been stripped down is a good idea, a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports finds that canabis is roughly 114 times less deadly than alcohol and there is no point in mentioning the other substances.
