President Barack Obama had stern words for GOP members of the U.S. Senate after that group sent a letter to Iran’s leaders regarding the potential scrapping of a nuclear deal. Mr. Obama ripped the action in a political fashion while Vice President Joe Biden used more pointed language.

Raw Story reported on the letter and the president’s reactions earlier Tuesday morning, with GOP Senate members sticking to their guns. The letter was signed by 47 GOP senators, several of whom are vying to become their party’s top candidate in the 2016 presidential elections. The letter was addressed to the Islamic Republic, and looked to undercut any future negotiations between American and Iran.

Raw Story has more:

Republicans warned any deal agreed before Obama leaves office in 2017 is “nothing more than an executive agreement between President Barack Obama and (supreme leader) Ayatollah Khamenei.”

“The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time,” they added.

Obama reacted by saying he would make his case to voters.

“I think it is somewhat ironic to see some members of Congress wanting to make common cause with hardliners in Iran,” Obama said. “It is an unusual coalition.”

“What we are going to focus on right now is actually seeing whether we can get a deal,” added Obama. “Once we do, if we do, then we’ll be able to make the case to the American people.”

Biden, who has been emerging as a potential presidential hopeful for 2016, was especially harsh on the GOP Senate members’ actions.

“This letter sends a highly misleading signal to friend and foe alike that our commander-in-chief cannot deliver on America’s commitments — a message that is as false as it is dangerous,” said Biden in a statement.

This is the latest in recent bold steps by the GOP to tarnish the Obama presidency and wield its surging power in Congress after recent political gains in the 2010 and 2014 midterms.
