Republican Senator Ted Cruz made headlines this week after becoming the first high-profile GOP member to officially enter the 2016 race for the White House. The Texas politician talked tough in previous times regarding a repeal of Obamacare, but actually will sign up with the health care exchange in light of his criticisms.
Cruz, who was covered under his wife Heidi’s health care plan, says he’ll follow the law and sign up for health care under the Affordable Care Act exchange. Cruz said on Tuesday (Mar. 24) that he intends to get signed up soon as possible.
The Des Moines Register writes:
“We will presumably go on the exchange and sign up for health care, and we’re in the process of transitioning over to do that,” Cruz, a Republican candidate for president, told The Des Moines Register on Tuesday.
Cruz’s wife, Heidi, is going on an unpaid leave of absence from her job at Goldman Sachs to join Cruz full time on the campaign trail, Cruz told the Register.
Bloomberg was first to report that Heidi Cruz has taken the leave. CNN noted that Cruz, who has boasted about not needing to receive government health care benefits, would no longer be covered under his wife’s health insurance plan.
Back in 2013, Cruz and other House Republicans backed an effort to cut down the Affordable Care Act which led to the 16-day federal government shutdown. Voters might be reminded of the extreme actions of Cruz by his opponents in coming weeks as he forms his campaign.
Cruz, known for his strong conservative views, has rallied the Tea Party based and other hard Right voters by way of his proposed policies and stances.
