Percy Sledge, the crooner behind the 1966 hit record “When A Man Loves A Woman,” died this morning in his Baton Rouge, LA home, according to ABC News. He was 73.

Sledge’s agent of 35 years, Steve Green, confirmed that he lost a long battle with cancer.

Born and bred in Alabama, the crooner juggled w0rk as a hospital orderly and aspiring musician, using his free time to perform at clubs and parties. He’d eventually score big with the aforementioned single, and other songs, including “Warm and Tender Love,” “It Tears Me Up,” and “Take Time to Know Her.”

Sledge was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
