Earl Sweatshirt surprises fans with Solace, a 10-minute long project dedicated to his mother.
He first spoke of this project’s existence during a recent conversation with NPR. “We set up a studio at my house and I did a little project real real fast,” he told Microphone Check’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Frannie Kelly. “It’s called Solace. And that, I’m just sitting — it’s more for my mom.”
Sweatshirt, while speaking with Grantland, said his last album I Don’t Like Sh*t, I Don’t Go Outside is a byproduct of his experiences at ages 19 and 20. That time was the aftermath of his stint at a boarding school in Samoa, at his mother’s orders (which made her a villain and potential victim of violence and constant victim of verbal abuse at the hands of Earl’s fans).
Repairing his damage relationship with his mother has since been Earl’s priority, which is apparent in cathartic lines on the aforementioned album and continues in greater detail throughout Solace. Listen below.
