A Black Georgia man found hanging from a tree behind a Greene County home Monday (May 11) has shaken the small town of Greensboro. Roosevelt Champion III‘s body was discovered in the morning hours, prompting a swift investigation by local authorities and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Details surrounding the case have been developing over the past 24 hours, with WAGA-TV reporting that the GBI said the 43-year-old Champion has been questioned previously as part of a homicide investigation. The Greensboro Police Department confirmed to a local radio station that Champion was found just after 11:00 a.m. by a witness walking nearby.

Lead GBI Agent Joe Wooten says that an autopsy will be conducted, although early speculation is not leading authorities to suspect foul play in Champion’s death. However, Wooten stated that he and his team will collect all pertinent evidence. Wooten elaborated on Champion being questioned in the investigation of white 55-year-old woman Carol Lewis, who was found dead in an apartment in town. Champion was not charged.

A report from WXIA-TV added that the GBI interviewed Champion twice last week regarding Lewis’ death. However, GBI maintained that Champion was not a suspect.
