Much like gear and fashion, nostalgic Hip-Hop movies appear to be the wave this years. VH1 is throwing their name in the pot with their developing drama, The Breaks, and they using a couple of centerpieces from The Wire to make it pop.

Both Mack Wilds and Wood Harris have been cast in yet-undisclosed leading roles according to Deadline. Wilds and Harris’ characters on the acclaimed hit show never actually had any interaction, but their respective performances were hailed in their own right. Gossip Girl’s David Call and Antoine Harris of HBO’s Ballers fame also round out the main cast.

To add to its authenticity, DJ Premier has been signed on as the film’s music producer, much like Timbaland to Empire.

The Breaks is based on based on Dan Charnas’ nonfiction book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, which chronicles the history of the culture since it was created in the 1970s’ Bronx. The film will be set at the height of Hip-Hop’s capital gain period in 1990 New York City and follow the journey of three friends (Nikki (Williamson), David (Call) and DeeVee (Wilds) as they attempt to make it big in the business.

Fellow Wire alum Seith Mann has been nabbed to write, direct and executive produce the film which begins filming this fall.
