President Barack Obama has not been shy about addressing race in today’s tense climate, which has been further agitated by the actions of Dylann Roof and the recent situation in Baltimore. As a guest on comedian Marc Maron‘s “WTF” podcast, the president dropped the “n-word” but used it in a context that pundits seemed to have overlooked for the sake of sensationalism.

Politco was one of many news outlets to cover the interview, which covered far more than just the n-word. Maron and President Obama had a frank discussion on race matters in America among other issues, which led to the now-circulating quote in question.

More from Politico:

“The legacy of slavery, Jim Crow, discrimination in almost every institution of our lives, you know, that casts a long shadow, and that’s still part of our DNA that’s passed on. We’re not cured of it,” Obama said in the interview, posted in full on Monday. “And it’s not just a matter of it not being polite to say ‘n——-’ in public. That’s not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It’s not just a matter of overt discrimination. … Societies don’t overnight completely erase everything that happened 2-300 years prior.”

Amazingly enough, talking heads nearly called for the president’s impeachment over the word and reaction on social media has been quick to correct those who feel Obama was out of line. The man IS the leader of this great nation, and he wasn’t exactly using the term violently like some people tend to do, right? Right.

It appears that Maron’s website is down for the moment so check out Politico’s report in the clip below.
