A week full of controversy and media frenzy was enough to generate a buzz for Straight Outta Compton to reign supreme at the box office yet again, giving the N.W.A biopic a grand total of $115.7 million in ticket sales.

“It is the movie of the moment, the movie everyone is talking about. Thank goodness for Straight Outta Compton because we definitely need that boost,” says Rentrak senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian tells USA TODAY.

The Universal Pictures-helmed filmed, opened up to $60.2 million during its opening weekend, exceeding all expectations on its $29 million production budgets.

Jeff Bock, senior box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, offered up reasoning behind the Hip-Hop film’s success saying, “”Heres a film that was specifically catering toward an African-American audience, and it broke through those boundaries that first weekend and continues to do so. That’s a great story.”
