A 60-year-old baseball fan fell to his death after booing Alex Rodriguez in Atlanta’s Turner Field Saturday (Aug. 30) night. Gregory Murrey was a Georgia native, and devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves.
Murrey, a season-ticket holder for 23 years, fell from the upper deck down below, as fans watched horrified at the tragedy. It was the seventh inning of the Braves vs. the New York Yankees, when Rodriguez took the bat. Murrey ran to the railing and began booing before falling and landing on the stands behind home plate. “I thought it was a fight at first but it wasn’t a fight,” said a witness at the game. ”EMS was doing chest compressions for about 20 minutes.”
He hit the stairs between two sections,’’ recalled another witness. “I looked to my right and saw some figure falling down, and the guide wire started shaking.”
Murrey’s family says he died “doing one of his favorite things, watching the Braves.”
On Sunday, the Braves paid tribute to Murrey with a moment of silence, with Rodriguez among the players paying their respects. “The Atlanta Braves are deeply saddened by the loss of Greg Murrey at last night’s game,” the team said in a statement, Sunday. “Greg was a valued and longtime season ticket holder and an incredibly passionate Braves fan. This tragic loss is felt throughout Braves Country, and the thoughts and prayers of the entire Braves organization continue to go out to his family and friends.”
Murrey is the third person to die from falling at Turner Field since 2008.
