The bloke who said Idris Elba was too street and lacked the suaveness necessary to play James Bond has apologized for his suspect commentary. British author Anthony Horowitz claims it was poor word choice that led to his struggle.
Considering Elba’s movie star looks and an acting resume that makes Oscar winners jealous, social media erupted with outrage over the racial overtones of the James Bond writer’s comments. Horowaitz’s mentions must have been in flames because that’s where he want to offer his mea culpa.
“‘I’m really sorry my comments about Idris Elba have caused offence [sic],” read the tweet that contained his full statement.
“Clumsily I chose the word ‘street’ as Elba’s gritty portrayal of DCI John Luther was in my mind…” wrote Horowitz, referring to the titular character of the BBC drama Luther.
And they say social media doesn’t have its benefits. But will this help people take pause when using racial “code words” or will they just do better at keeping those racist attitudes to themselves?
