Police in are investigating the shooting death of a 16-year-old suspected home intruder in St. Louis County. The teen was shot to death Thursday (Sept. 3) afternoon by an 11-year-old boy who had a gun in his possession, and was home with his 4-year-old sister.

Authorities say mother was gone, however, its unclear if the teen was actually an intruder. Witnesses deny the home invasion story, and claim the boy and the teen were arguing on the front porch.

Officers responded Thursday afternoon to a report of a shooting at a north St. Louis County home, Police Sgt. Brian Schellman told The Associated Press.

Police believe two suspects had tried to break into the modest ranch-style home two times earlier in the day. On the third try, they were able to enter through the front door, Schellman said. There were no signs of forced entry.

Soon after the 16-year-old entered, the 11-year-old fired a single shot that struck him in the head, Schellman said. The teenager’s body was found in the front foyer, and Schellman said the shot may have scared away the second suspect, who was taken into custody a short time later. Schellman said that suspect, 22, was still in custody Friday, but has not been charged.

“The boy’s body jumped up when towards [him]… arms flew down and he landed in his doorway,” said the anonymous witness of the teen being shot. When asked she reiterated that he “never went inside the house.”

An 18-year-old eyewitness shared similar details. “He was never in the house,” said Jazmyne Clark. “He wasn’t breaking in at all. He was just trying to sell him his phone.”

The 11-year-old boy is being questioned by police, and his mother is said to be cooperating with the investigation.
