If you think disgraced NBC anchor Brian Williams’ fabricated war stories were bad, wait until you get a load of the lie comedian Steve Rannazzisi has been living for the past fourteen years.

This past Friday, the country mourned together as yet another anniversary of the 9/11 attacks passed but for Steve Rannazzisi, it was a day he had used to gain leverage for his eventual career in Hollywood.

Per a 2009 interview, the then 31-year-old Long Island native claimed to have narrowly escaped the first plane crash into the World Trade Center while he worked in the south tower at Merrill Lynch on the 54th floor.

“I still have dreams of like, you know, those falling dreams,” he told the Marc Maron.

When confronted for an interview last week as the anniversary for 9/11 approached, Rannazzisi told a completely different tale and came clean.

“I was not at the Trade Center on that day,” his publicist, Matthew Labov said in a statement given to The New York Times. “I don’t know why I said this. This was inexcusable. I am truly, truly sorry.”

“For many years, more than anything,” he said, “I have wished that, with silence, I could somehow erase a story told by an immature young man. It only made me more ashamed. How could I tell my children to be honest when I hadn’t come clean about this? It was profoundly disrespectful to those who perished and those who lost loved ones. The stupidity and guilt I have felt for many years has not abated. It was an early taste of having a public persona, and I made a terrible mistake. All I can ask is for forgiveness.”

The fictional trauma Rannazzisi suffered was the catalyst for his reasoning to moving to Los Angeles and seeing his career get a boost.

Best known for his portrayal as fantasy football league player Kevin MacArthur in the FXX comedy series The League, Rannazzisi immediately found work upon his arrival to Los Angeles in Ashton Kuthcher’s famed MTV series Punk’d and several other short-lived pilots.

It has also been discovered that he did not graduate from State University of New York at Purchase like his bio claimed but rather the State University of New York at Oneonta with a degree in communications.

Cue the theme music and check out Steve Rannazzisi’s official Twitter statement on the next few pages.
