The pot Straight Outta Compton cooked up this year just keeps getting sweeter as director F. Gary Gray has set a new milestone.

After the film pulled in an estimated $157.5 million in the U.S. and Canada, F. Gary Gray became the highest-grossing Black director for a single film, besting Keenen Ivory Wayans’s 2000 comedy Scary Movie and Tim Story’s 2005 superhero flick Fantastic Four, as reported by VIBE. In a pre-release interview with Hip-Hop Wired, the veteran director who first gained fame working with Ice Cube on the classic movie Friday, revealed that dreamers of all walks of life should go out and see the movie. It looks like he got his wish.

Although F. Gary Gray’s name moved past Wayans and Story in the domestic rankings, Fantastic Four still reigns supreme internationally with $175.8 million at the box office while Scary Movie stands at the second place with $121 million worldwide. Thus far, Straight Outta Compton has taken in $24.9 million across the globe.
