The hopelessly devoted girlfriend of James “Whitey” Bulger was indicted  on criminal contempt charges Tuesday (Sept. 22) because she refuses to snitch on anyone who may have helped the Boston mobster stay in hiding between the mid-90s until both were arrested in 2011. Catherine Greig, 64, was sentenced eight years for her role in helping Bulger evade authorities for years.

Bulger and Greig were found living in a San Monica, Calif. apartment (which may be still up for rent if anyone is interested) with over $800,000 stashed in the walls and lots of guns.

Greig’s lawyer has called Bulger the “love of her life,” and the indictment a “vindictive move” by the government. “Other than living with Mr. Bulger for that number of years, she has done nothing wrong in her life at all. … This is just harassment and she is not going to cooperate with them,” said Kevin Reddington.

According to the indictment, between December 2014 and Tuesday of this week, Greig repeatedly disobeyed court orders to testify on “third parties who assisted and harbored,” Bulger.

“Catherine Greig has yet again failed to do the right thing,” said acting FBI special agent Joseph Bonavolonta, of the Boston chapter. ”Her refusal to testify has hindered the FBI’s efforts to seek justice for the victims of his crimes.”

Bulger took Greig on the run with him when he returned to Boston to drop his other girlfriend off. He has since been sentenced to two life sentences, plus five years, for nearly a dozen murders, and more charges.

A date for Greig’s arraignment on the new charges has not yet been set.
