Trevor Noah made his debut on The Daily Show Monday night (Sept. 28), taking over the desk for departing host Jon Stewart. While Noah had mighty big shoes to fill in hosting the show, his debut opening monologue proves he had exactly what it takes to keep the show pushing forward.

Noah’s big moment wasn’t lost on him. Although the South African comedian has been thrilling audiences around the world for years, The Daily Show is one of pop culture’s most revered institutions. Noah’s cheery and cheeky style of comedy, which he often riffs on race and social issues, worked well in his opener and sparked lots of laughter from the audience.

“Growing up in the dusty streets of South Africa, I never dreamed that I would one day have, well, two things, really,” said Noah. “An indoor toilet and a job as host of The Daily Show. Now I have both, and I’m quite comfortable with one of them.”

Noah goes on to add that having the job is strange for both him and probably the audience, using that moment as a segue in one of his signature jokes jabbing at race.

Our recap does little justice to the monologue so we invite you to watch Trevor Noah’s introduction to the world via The Daily Show below.
