Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the elusive Mexican drug kingpin, has avoided capture once again but not without suffering some wounds in the process. It has been reported that El Chapo narrowly escaped from Mexican government forces near the base of operations of the Sinaloa drug cartel leader.

Reuters reports:

In a statement, the Mexican government said it had worked with international agencies to capture Guzman, and that in recent weeks, efforts had been focused on the northwest of the country, not far from Guzman’s native turf of Sinaloa state.

“As a result of these actions, and to avoid his capture, in recent days, the fugitive engaged in a hasty retreat, which, according to the information received, caused him injuries to one leg and the face,” the government statement said.

“It’s important to clarify that these injuries were not a product of a direct clash,” the statement added, without giving further information.

The search and failed attempts of returning El Chapo to prison have been a slight source of embarrassment for Mexican forces. Adding to the latest gaffe in securing Guzman’s capture was news from the Associated Press that the leader was flown to the mountains after he escaped prison back in July by crawling through a mile-long tunnel.

It was the same Sinaloan mountain region that authorities had been searching for signs of Guzman when it was revealed on Friday that he got away.
