John Singleton’s son is having trouble paying for college so he launched a GoFund Me Page to raise money. Maasai Singleton needs $6,000 to cover his tuition at the acclaimed, and notably expensive, University of Southern California.

On his fundraising page, Maasai explains that he’s a senior at the USC Writing for Screen and Television program, and needs money because his father won’t pay for it:

With only one month before my final semester, my father has informed me that he won’t be helping me with tuition. The timing of this information is such that I’m not able to apply for many financial aid options that would otherwise be available. I’ve met with the financial aid office, and even with loans, I simply won’t be able to make up for the nearly $30,000 due this semester to cover the final 20 units that I need to graduate. Tuition is due in just three weeks.

If you help me graduate I will be exceedingly grateful. I hope you would consider any shares, tweets, prayers, and donations an investment in future stories. By sharing with your social networks or campaigning with your organizations, you can help me create work to inspire others.

The page was created last month. In an update from a  couple of weeks ago, Maasai says he can’t get a loan because he doesn’t have credit, therefore donations are the only way he can graduate:

I’m not calling on people who’ve already donated to give more. I don’t want to be a burden to anybody and I know that if more people just gave a little bit, (like a happy meal’s worth) our small efforts would add up to success.

He raised close to $3,000 so far.
